Verdict

The Audi A3 passes its MOT first time on 74.4% of tests, against 68.8% for a typical car of the same age and mileage. It beats 77% of cars on UK roads: level with the Škoda Octavia, slightly behind the BMW 1 Series, and ahead of the VW Golf, Mercedes A-Class and Ford Focus.

2013–2018 cars beat about nine in ten cars. 2005–2012 cars and cars from 2019 on both beat about seven in ten.

From 6 to 12 years old, an A3 passes about 6–8 points more often than a typical car of the same age and mileage.

Steering and lights fail much less often than on a typical car. The weak spot is ball joint dust covers, at about 2.1 times the typical rate and almost all of it on cars from before 2013.

Buying one or MOT due? Check these

  • Ball joint dust covers
Fail about twice as often as on a typical car on 2004–2012 cars. Look behind the front wheels for split rubber boots on the suspension and steering joints.
  • Drive shaft (CV) joints
CV joint boots fail about 1.6 times as often as on a typical car on 2004–2012 cars. Look for split boots and grease inside the front wheels, and listen for clicking on full lock.
  • Coil springs
One of the most common fails on 2004–2012 cars, at about 1.3 times the typical rate. Look behind each wheel for a snapped coil and listen for clunks over bumps.
  • Tyres
Tyre damage is the A3's most common fail, and on cars from 2019 on it comes up about 1.4 times as often as on a typical car. Check both sidewalls of every tyre for cuts, bulges and cracking.
  • Shock absorbers
About 1.5 times the typical rate on cars from 2013 on, and twice from 2019 on. Push down hard on each corner: it should rebound once and settle.
  • Headlight aim
The second most common fail, at about the typical rate. Park facing a wall at night: both dipped beams should sit level and dip to the left.

74.4% of Audi A3 MOT tests were passed first time, from 3.6 million tests. A typical car of the same age and mileage passes 68.8%.

Is the Audi A3 reliable?

On MOT results it is well above average: it beats 77% of cars on UK roads, and 2013–2018 cars beat about nine in ten. MOT results cover safety and emissions items, not every kind of breakdown.

Which Audi A3 years are best?

The 2.5 petrol (RS 3) does best. Of the most common engines, the 1.4 and 2.0 petrol beat about nine in ten cars, with the 1.5 petrol close behind. The 1.6 petrol, sold until 2012, is around average, and the 1.9 diesel a little better.

What are the most common MOT failures on the Audi A3?

Tyre damage, headlight aim, tyre tread depth and coil springs.

How we calculate this. We use official MOT results for cars tested in Great Britain from 2018 to 2026. Each car is compared with typical cars of the same age and mileage, so old and new cars are judged fairly; “pts” are percentage points above or below them. Differences also reflect how cars are used and maintained, not only how they are built.
